No current plans to sack Cockburn Council

Posted October 10, 2008 14:12:00

The West Australian Local Government Minister John Castrilli says he will sack the Cockburn City Council only if he believes it's acting dysfunctionally.

A recent Corruption and Crime Commission report made five misconduct findings against the Council's Mayor Stephen Lee for failing to disclose up to $40,000 of campaign donations.

At a council meeting last night, attended by more than 300 residents, there were calls for the Government to sack the council after it approved Mr Lee's application for paid leave.

Mr Castrilli says he has no current plans to sack the council and will only act if he finds it is not engaging in "good governance."

"Any council throughout Western Australia, if the good governance of that council is in question or (sic) that would give me the opportunity to dismiss that council and I will do so," he said.

"I and my department will keep an eye on that, it's about the functionality of that council, it's about good governance of that council, that's what I'll be looking at and I'll have no hesitation, if I think it's necessary I'll have option of dismissing that council and I will."
