Report predicts more coastal floods, fires

Posted October 10, 2008 15:03:00

A new report by the CSIRO has found floods and fires will become more frequent in coastal areas.

The report, commissioned by an alliance of councils, including Bass Coast, found one-in-100 year storms could occur every six years by 2070.

It also found rainfall could decrease by a quarter, and average temperatures will rise by about 3.5 per cent.

Greg Hunt from the Western Port Greenhouse Alliance says the information will help councils and communities adapt to the changing climate.

"We're used to dealing with floods, get used to dealing with them more often, we're used to having fires, it's likely we're going to have more of them, so the sorts of responses we could make are the sorts of things emergency services already do and we're probably going to need to support them more," he said.
