Green light for new $15m coal mine

Posted October 10, 2008 15:32:00

The New South Wales Government has approved the creation of a new coal mine 15 kilometres north-west of Gunnedah.

The construction of the $15 million open cut mine, in the state's north-west, is expected to begin by the end of the month.

It will generate about a million tonnes of coal each year during its seven year lifespan.

Gunnedah Mayor Adam Marshall says the mine will be great for the community.

"What it represents for this community is 33 new jobs for local people, local young people for the future in Gunnedah," he said.

He says the developer has agreed to donate $500,000 to a community fund and upgrade the road haulage route along the Oxley Highway.
