Ads aim to turn St George shareholders off takeover

Posted October 15, 2008 12:43:00

The Finance Sector Union says it hopes a new advertising campaign will convince St George Bank shareholders to reject a takeover by Westpac.

Shareholders will meet next month to vote on the proposal, which the union says will lead to the loss of up to 5,000 jobs.

The Union's Leanne Shingles says she is confident shareholders can be convinced to look beyond the bottom line.

"While it will be difficult to turn down an attractive offer, a lot of shareholders have indicated to us that there are things that are equally important to them, and that is maintaining jobs in the sector and having a bank that provides a good service to customers and good products," she said.
