Govts urged to fund Mallee road improvements

Posted October 15, 2008 16:00:00

The Federal and Victorian Governments are being urged to fund improvements to a southern Mallee road in the state's north.

The Yarriambiack Shire's spending $100,000 to improve gravel shoulders on the Yaapeet-Rainbow Road, but says more work is needed.

Part of the reason for wanting the road upgraded is continuing concern about whether the Yaapeet railway line will fall into disuse.

Yarriambiack Mayor Andrew McLean says bids for VicRoads and Auslink funding are being made.

"When you've got B-doubles travelling on that road, certainly there's no more room left on the road for any other vehicles going the other way," he said.

"It's a fairly narrow strip, without the shoulder work and so forth it's a fairly dangerous or narrow strip of road with a fairly high traffic flow with gypsum and grain."
