Zimbabwe deal close: MDC

Posted October 16, 2008 08:43:00

Zimbabwe's opposition says it is close to a deal with the President Robert Mugabe on forming a cabinet.

The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) says history is being made in the talks mediated by the former South African President Thabo Mbeki.

MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai threatened to pull out of the agreement on Sunday after Mr Mugabe allocated key ministries, including defence, home affairs - which oversees the police - and finance, to his ZANU-PF party.

Mr Tsvangirai said talks would restart on Thursday, adding there were still some outstanding matters.

Mr Mugabe's party lost its majority for the first time since independence from Britain in 1980 after a March 29 election which the opposition says he rigged to keep power.

A stable government has long been seen as Zimbabwe's best hope for climbing out of economic ruin, marked by severe food, fuel and foreign currency shortages.
