Veteran Kangaroos midfielder Brent Harvey has been named as the Australian captain for the International Rules series against Ireland.

Harvey will play in his fifth series which starts in Perth next week.

West Coast's Adam Selwood and Hawthorn's Campbell Brown are the vice-captains.

Australia's coach Mick Malthouse says he is pleased to have Harvey leading the group.

"The leadership team we have picked will serve us very well, because these players consistently produce a strong effort, no matter what the circumstances of any match or any occasion may be," Malthouse said in a statement.

"Brent Harvey leads the way in our game with his commitment to training, his preparation, his on-field consistency and his willingness to always improve himself."
