The best Games ever The Sydney Olympic Games closed with a raucus and irreverent closing ceremony and a spectacular fireworks display over Sydney Harbour.
Speaking at the ceremony, Juan Antonio Samaranch, the President of the IOC, gave special thanks to the Olympic volunteers and Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander communities before declaring Sydney to have been the best Olympic Games ever.
A pantheon of Australian musicians performed at the ceremony. The last to appear was country music legend Slim Dusty, who lead the crowd at Stadium Australia through an upbeat rendition of ‘Waltzing Matilda’.
Australia won more medals in Sydney than at any previous Olympic Games. A silver and a bronze medal in Sunday’s delayed kayaking events meant that Australia finished with 16 gold, 25 silver and 17 bronze medals, a total of 58.
Paralympics also great success Sydney also embraced the 4000 athletes who have arrived for the eleventh Paralympic Summer Games. For more information on the Paralympics, including news and feature articles and descriptions of all the sports, visit the ABC's Paralympics site.
Torch relay started it all The longest ever Olympic torch relay brought the Olympic flame from Greece to Sydney. After travelling through the South Pacific, the flame was carried around Australia for 100 days. For more information about where it went, look at the ABC's Torch Relay site
