Federal politics with Michelle Grattan - G20 Summit
World leaders, including Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, have put their heads together this weekend at the G20 meeting in Washington in a bid to come up with a six-point plan to beat the world financial crisis. They've called for a more transparent and accountable system, and will meet again after a set of concrete proposals is developed by the end of March next year. Before the meeting, nations around the world spent billions to stimulate their economies and Australia was no exception, with the ten-point $4 billion package for families and pensioners about to hit bank accounts.
In the near future, things don't look like getting better, and the government is already talking about a second stimulus package for the economy, although no one in the government wants to talk about the fact that a deficit might be necessary to pay for the plans.
