Local Government summit

One of Kevin Rudd's election promises will be kept this week. Australia's 565 mayors and shire presidents have been invited to Parliament House in Canberra for tomorrow's first meeting of the Australian Council of Local Government. We don't know exactly how much money will accompany the talking— the Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner just told this program no decision has been made, though there are newspaper reports that the government will announce $100 million for community infrastructure, to be spent by local councils. The Local Government Minister Anthony Albanese says it could be spent on revitalising town centres and building community halls, libraries, sporting grounds and swimming pools. One mayor who's keen to get a piece of the action is Andrew Lewis, the mayor of Bourke shire council in far western NSW.
