Asylum conscience
One of the most contentious policies of John Howard's government was the mandatory detention of asylum seekers, including women and children. Until now most of the focus in this debate has been on the players within government and the asylum seekers themselves. But Margot O'Neill, senior journalist with the ABC's Lateline program, has just finished a book about those behind the scenes: the refugee advocates and others from across the political spectrum who were moved to do something about the plight of people in detention.
