Wide Open Road: CARPET

Part three of Wide Open Road looks at how Australian music was formed through a pub culture that allowed many musicians to hone their craft to live audiences. We'll hear tales of some of Australia's classic band venues, some long forgotten, some still going strong, and the music that was made there. Featured artists in this program are The Presets, Radio Birdman, Midnight Oil, Hunters and Collectors, The Laughing Clowns, The Scientists, Silverchair, The Grates.

The loud, aggressive environment of big suburban pubs shaped a tough rock and roll, where the aim was to play loud and fast, and get off stage alive. In the inner suburbs of our big cities, tiny venues were more like musical laboratories, where musicians from around Australia converged to experiment and create new sounds. In the early 1990s the live music scene fractured, as dance music and festivals took punters from the pubs. But these days, in the age of free downloads and MySpace, playing live is as important as ever.

Wide Open Road Four is a four part documentary series to be broadcast on Radio National and triple j during Australian music month about how Australian contemporary music has been shaped by our unique environment. Over four weeks, the series explores the way the landscape and the social and cultural environment has shaped distinctly Australian music. From the desert to the coast, the suburbs to the outback, from punk to hip hop, you'll hear some of our best known songwriters talk about where they're from and why it matters.
The programs are narrated by Richard Kingsmill.

Sound Engineer: Mark Don
RN Executive Producer: Robyn Ravlich

Wide Open Road continues online with extended interviews, photos, tracks to stream and a road map of Australian lyrics. Listeners are invited to get involved and submit stories and photos, lyrics about Australia and your favourite memories of gigs, songs and artists.
