Wide Open Road: COAST

In the final episode of Wide Open Road we'll explore how coastal places and experiences have shaped Australian music. The smell of salt water and the gentle swell of the ocean loom large in our national consciousness. From high energy surf music to the laid back rhythms of roots and blues, the coast brings people together. Featured artists are The Pigram Brothers, The Waifs, John Butler, The Celibate Rifles, The Drones, Silverchair, and Neil Murray.

The beach is where we strip back to our essentials, where everyone feels equal and where we find ourselves in the uncomplicated rhythms of nature. The coast is also where the world comes to us. Music has travelled across the ocean to us from many different shores, and like a big fish stew we've cooked up over a fire on the beach, coastal music is a mix of many different flavours.

Wide Open Road is a four part documentary broadcast on Radio National and triple j about how Australian contemporary music has been shaped by our unique environment. Over four weeks, the series explores the way the landscape and the social and cultural environment has shaped distinctly Australian music. From the desert to the coast, the suburbs to the outback, from punk to hip hop, you'll hear some of our best known songwriters talk about where they're from and why it matters.

The programs are narrated by Richard Kingsmill.
Sound Engineer: Mark Don
RN Executive Producer: Robyn Ravlich

Wide Open Road continues online with extended interviews, photos, tracks to stream and a road map of Australian lyrics. Listeners are invited to get involved and submit stories and photos, lyrics about Australia and your favourite memories of gigs, songs and artists.
