Melbourne Future of Journalism summit

The MEAA and the Walkley Foundation are holding their latest 'Future of Journalism' summit. Events have already been held this year in Sydney and Brisbane and this time it's Melbourne's turn.

In the wake of massive cost cutting at media groups around Australia and with traditional media struggling to meet the challenge of digital technology, the 'Future of Journalism' summit on Wednesday 26 November will examine the global trends confronting the media industry, the challenges confronting journalism, and what journalists can do to prepare themselves for a radically different future.

Speakers at the all-day event include: Robert Gottliebsen of Business Spectator; Pulitzer Prize-winner Jan Schaffer, executive director of J-Lab, the Institute for Interactive Journalism; Michael Gawenda, former Age editor and now director of the Centre for Advanced Journalism at the University of Melbourne; Lonely Planet founder Tony Wheeler; Margaret Simons, author of The Content Makers; Professor Philip Meyer, author of The Vanishing Newspaper; Ivor Ries of broking firm EL&C Baillieu; Russel Howcroft of ad agency George Patterson Y&R; Christian Guerra of Goldman Sachs JBWere; Jane Schulze of The Australian; Lawrie Zion of La Trobe University; Matthew Ricketson of The Age; Jonathan Green of Crikey.com.au; Rafat Ali of Paidcontent.org; Rod Peno, of Wires and Lights in a Box blog; Asher Moses, Young Australian Online Journalist of the Year; James Kirby, editor of the Eureka Report and Stephen Brook, assistant editor of MediaGuardian.co.uk. The summit, part of the 'Future of Journalism' project, a joint initiative of the Media Alliance and the Walkley Foundation, is being held at the Telstra Conference Centre, 242 Exhibition Street (corner Lonsdale and Exhibition Streets), Melbourne on 26 November (the day before the Walkley Awards for Excellence in Journalism at Crown Palladium). Summit tickets are $50 for Alliance members, $80 for non-members. There is also a special package deal of only $225 for both the Walkley Awards Gala Presentation Dinner, 27 November, Crown Palladium, and the Summit on 26th November.
