Until the early 19th century the great 'southern' continent had aroused very little interest - scientifically or in paint. Many saw it as 'wanting' in relation to the beauty and excitement of Europe. This 'colonial' attitude began to shift in the early 19th century with the arrival of an English clergyman-geologist, W.B. Clarke, and the Austrian born painter, Eugene von Guérard. Both men were captivated by the new science of geology and the uniqueness of the Australian landscape.
