The Cry of the Coorong

The Coorong is one of Australia's most fragile wetlands - a narrow lagoon that runs parallel to the South Australian coast a couple of hours' drive south of Adelaide. The setting for Colin Thiele's famous story Storm Boy, it's been home to vast numbers of water birds. But now, the Coorong is choking to death. The Cry of the Coorong is a meditation on the meaning of landscapes and how they call to us.

Garry Hera-Singh is a Coorong fisherman and President of the Southern Fishermen's Association Inc., based in Meningie.

The SFA operates the Lakes and Coorong Commercial Fishery, which is theFirst Multi-species, Multi-gear Community Fishery Worldwide to achieve Sustainability Certification by the Independent Marine Stewardship Council

Tom Trevorrow is a Ngarrindjeri Cultural Educator, and Manager of Camp Coorong , a Race Relations and Cultural Education Centre on the Coorong near Meningie. He is also Chair of Ngarrindjeri Lands and Progress Association


Lesley and Mick Fischer are dairy farmers whose property lies between the Coorong and Lake Albert. They recently sold their herd of 500 dairy cattle because the water in Lake Albert had become too salty to feed stock.

Associate Professor David Paton is Head of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Adelaide and has been working as a scientist in the Coorong for 25 years.

Rob England is a farmer in the south-east of South Australia, a former member of the South East Drainage Board, and author of The Cry of the Coorong. The History of Water Flows into the Coorong. From Feast to Famine?
