Indian odyssey

India's tour of Australia last summer will go down as one of world cricket's more spiteful series.

Sledging by both sides was rampant, there were claims and counter-claims of bad sportsmanship, even cheating.

To top it all off, controversial Indian off-spinner Harbajhan Singh was suspended for three matches for racially vilifying Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds.

It was in many ways not a great advertisement for the game, but it was to some extent not surprising given the fierce rivalry that has developed between the countries in recent times.

The next chapter in this story is about to written, when India and Australia play the first test in Bangalore next week.

Andrew Symonds isn't playing this time around and Harbajhan Singh has publicly pledged to, in his own words, clean up his act.

But don't take any of that to mean we're about to be treated to a sudden outbreak of smiling and backslapping.
