FLOOD THREAT ADVICE
Issued by the BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY, DARWIN
at 1101 CST Thursday 8 JANUARY 2009

AREA INVOLVED
Arnhem and Roper-McArthur Districts.

RAINFALL SUMMARY
Scattered falls of 10-20mm, mostly with isolated afternoon storms, with isolated
falls 30-70mm. A single heavy fall over 100mm at Elcho Island.

WEATHER SUMMARY
The monsoon trough lies near the base of the Top End with a low near the coast
in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria the main focus for storm activity. The
trough is expected to move a little further northwards and deepen. The low may
also develop further.

FORECAST for the rest of today and Friday
Scattered falls 10-20mm today, mostly from isolated afternoon and evening
showers and storms, with isolated heavier falls 30-70mm. These falls will be
isolated enough that they will contribute little to any flooding of stream
rises.

On Friday, storms increasing around the Gulf of Carpentaria as the monsoon
trough deepens and the low possibly develops. Scattered falls 30-50mm developing
over the Arnhem and Roper-McArthur districts and isolated heavy falls 50-100mm.
These heavy falls may lead to significant stream rises and flooding of low lying
areas in the Arnhem district and add to widespread flooding in the
Roper-McArthur district.

OUTLOOK for Saturday and Sunday
Dependent on the development and movement of the monsoon trough and low.
However, widespread falls of 30-50mm are likely over the Arnhem and
Roper-McArthur districts with scattered heavier falls 50-100m and isolated falls
over 100mm. These heavy falls may lead to significant stream rises and flooding
of low lying areas in the Arnhem district and add to widespread flooding in the
Roper-McArthur district.

NEXT ADVICE
Around 11 am Friday.
