WHAT YOU DO
1) Fill the container to the top with water and press on the lid.
2) Place the metal bottle cap in the centre of the lid and
secure with a small bit of Blue Tac.
3) Place three of the pencils (or a couple more, depending on the size of the tin) next to each other on the table
and tape them together to make a flat platform, like a raft.
4) Sit the container on top of the pencil platform so that the pencils
poke out on both sides. Place the fourth pencil on top of
the bottle cap and fasten with a bit of Blue Tac.
5) As one person holds all the pieces together, use strong
tape to strap the top pencil tightly to the pencil platform
on either side of the tin.
6) Place in the freezer
7) Leave it in the freezer for at least 24 hrs and then check
it out - you'll be amazed...
WHAT'S GOING ON?
Water, unlike everything else in nature, does not get smaller
as it cools down but actually expands. As it freezes it can
exert incredible force. It has enough energy to burst open
the walls of plant and animal cells, crack rocks and burst
water pipes - phew!
Here's another test: Try leaving a carrot in the freezer for 24
hours and then thaw it out. You will see that what was once
a crisp and juicy snack is now a limp and wet casualty. The
water inside each cell in the carrot has frozen and burst
open. In mountain and polar explorers such burst cells can
cause frostbite, an irreversible
condition..ouch.
