ABC to host a 'Back to St Helens' concert on Saturday 21 April
Wednesday, 4 April 2007
For one anxious week back in December, ABC Local Radio’s Statewide Mornings program relocated to the main street of St Helens.
Communities along the East Coast, from Scamander to St Marys, were threatened by fire. The conditions were similar to those of 40 years ago when southern Tasmania was engulfed in an inferno, resulting in tragic loss of life and property. This time 18 houses and some out buildings were lost but there were no serious injuries during the emergency.
From Tuesday December 12 to Friday December 15 Tim Cox, Roisin McCann and the ABC Local Radio team kept everyone informed and relayed messages from loved ones across the airwaves. The community came together via the ‘bush telegraph’ of ABC Northern Tasmania, and 936 ABC Hobart.
On Saturday, April 21 Tim Cox, Roisin McCann and all the gang from ABC Local Radio, together with some very special guests, will go back to St Helens for a community celebration to say thank you to the many volunteers who stepped up to meet the challenge back in December. The area is regrowing and we want to invite people to come back to the East Coast to have fun.
The day of celebration will kick off with a free ABC Kids concert featuring Active Kidz and Bob the Builder.
At 4pm there’ll be a parade of Parks and Wildlife, Forestry Tasmania SES, and Tas Fire Service volunteers down the main street to be followed by a barbecue provided by the Rotary Clubs of St Helens.
Then it’s time to party with a free concert on the stage of the ABC Exhibition Trailer, hosted by Tim Cox and Roisin McCann. A stellar lineup led by ABC Country Music star Sara Storer will rock the Esplanade at St Helens. Pete Cornelius, Blue Cotton, the Embers and Bradley Trevor Grieve will also be there. And a special performance from St Helens Primary School Choir will be a highlight.
The concert will be recorded for replay on Sunday morning during the Chris Wisbey program, heard statewide.
Local Radio Manager Cath Hurley says,
"ABC Local Radio is presenting this special event to say thank you to the volunteers and the people of St Helens who made us so welcome during this difficult time. The response we received from around the state to the fire effort was overwhelming and we were proud to be of service to the East Coast Community during the fire emergency."
