Museum Piece - Crocoite

Thursday 22 September 2005

It’s time for another object from the vast collection at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and Niccole Warren, our collection commentator, is with the panel to tell us all about it. It looks like we’ve finally hit rock bottom with this...

Crocoite is the Tasmanian mineralogical emblem. It is identifiable by the red orange crystals and is extremely delicate.

A fairly rare mineral is is found in only six places in the world. Dundas in Tasmania is world famous for Crocoite specimens.

People came across it in the early years in lead mines in small caverns that were tapped into by accident.

Crocoite is not used for anything. It is purely mined these days for geological specimen collectors.
