Over to Gordon and this week he’s gone out and joined the army! Well almost.
He’s been out looking at a collection housed in the oldest military barracks in Australia. Anglesea Barracks has been in army hands for almost 200 years! Convicts started building the place in 1814.
In that time the soldiers there have amassed a huge collection of militaria, artillery, photographs, uniforms...in fact everything to do with the Australian Army as Gordon found out.
One particular item of interest is a uniform from the 99th Regiment of Foot raised in Glasgow in 1824 and posted to Tasmania after fighting in the first Maori War. The Regiment was renowned for being very smart and very well turned out.
Each cell in the Barracks is set up with an extensive display from the collection. Originally the military gaol, the cells had running water and central heating!
Lt Col Doug Wyatt (Rtd) is the curator of this museum and is a renowned expert in the field of military medals. The medal collection is extensive and a major area of interest for many collectors.
Most of the militaria housed in the museum comes from donations.
