This week’s passionate collector is Martin Tucker. He is a musician who collects what he plays - instruments from all over the world. Africa and rhythm are his big interests, so this collection doesn’t just look good, it sounds great too.
Martin spent a lot of time travelling in West Africa. As an instrument maker he is fascinated by how different cultures make instruments. Lots of the countries he visits do not have access to the tools and technology we are used to which means they are very ingeneous when making their instruments.
Many different materials are used which is integral to the sound of the instrument.
Sometimes it is hard to bring instruments home into Australia with our customs laws so Martin attempts to recreate the piece when he gets home.
