The Roving Eye - The Georgian Period

Thursday 3 November 2005

We’re off with Gordon, to the fine world of pediments, entablatures, pilasters and filigrees. What’s all that? It’s the language of the gorgeous Georgian period.

Gordon’s taking us back to the 18th Century, when four kings called George ruled England, one after the other. So here’s Gordon, on Georgian.

This period dates from the investiture of King George I in 1714 to the crowning of Queen Victoria in 1837. Most of the early Georgian design owes a lot of its features to the earlier Queen Anne period.

Georgian design is very elegant. The last period of the Georgian era was called 'Regency' and this encapsulates the very best of design, craftsmanship and materials of the time.

Thomas Chippendale's designs were the most ornate of all the Georgian furniture makers.

Another giant of the time was George Hepplewhite. His designer were not fully appreciated until his wife published a book of them two years after his death.

Thomas Sheraton was also a master of the time. He was also an inventor, artist, author and occasional preacher.
