Under The Hammer - 19th Century Carved Aboriginal Head

Thursday 17 November 2005

Under the hammer this week is a 19th Century Carved Aboriginal Head.

We are in unknown territory here. As the auctioneer said, anyone's guess will be as good as his.

The head is carved from cedar and is the head of Truganini the last known full blood Tasmanian Aboriginie. She died in Hobart in 1876.

The carved head dates between 1850-1880. The artist is unknown but there is an imprint of Truganini's name on the back.

Adrian guesses $350
Lauren guesses $250
Gordon guesses $500

It sells for $150 at auction.
