This week’s Mystery Object is a serving mallet from the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.
The item is from a sailmaker kit originally used on the Tasmanian vessel Lady Franklin. It dates from around 1820 and is made of wood. It was specifically used for administering and tightening the outer coil layer of twine to a rope to complete making the rope. It was most likely used by a convict deckhand and these type of tools have remained unchanged for two hundred years
