Under the hammer this week is a cabinet sculpture by Ferdinand Preiss, one of the most celebrated ivory carvers of the art deco period.
It’s extremely delicate and small. In the 1920s Ferdinand’s specialty was ivory and painted bronze cabinet sculptures, many of them nudes, mounted on a plinth of onyx or marble. They were made as limited editions and were very popular in England and America. The peacock on the sculpture is a bit of a mystery. It is not original but was added later. The piece is expected to sell well at auction.
Panel estimates:
Gordon: $3800
Niccole: $4200
Adrian: $4400
The Preiss Ivory Figure sold at auction for $3800
