The Mystery Object this week is a wooden box for the purpose of anonymous voting.

Black and white marbles were used to vote. The voter would place one of the balls inside, indicating white for a “yes” vote, black for a “no”. The lid slides off to reveal how many black vs white balls there are, indicating the vote result. This is where the saying “being blackballed” was derived. This piece is from approximately the 1930’s, and they are probably still used today within clubs and masons meetings.
