Under the hammer this week is a piece of First Fleet furniture.
It was discovered quite recently in a house outside London. Its provenance is determined from a hand written label inside the top drawer that says this piece was sent back to the UK by Dr White who was the surgeon to the First Fleet. It was sent in plank form to London to be made into a table. The material is beef wood, an early name for the native casuarina timber. The piece has been owned by five generations of one British naval family and 236 years later it is back in Sydney. There is a little bit of damage but this adds to the history of the piece.
