Shirley Hitchens from Tasmania isn’t sure exactly how many tins are in her collection but thinks it could be as many as 300. She says they’ve come from everywhere, including those given to her by her mother and nan and even her friends’ families.
Now that Shirley’s son has grown up, she has converted his bedroom into a showroom featuring shelves for her impressive tin collection.
Some of her tins bring back fond memories of when as a child she went to the local shop to buy a tin of broken biscuits for a penny. One of Shirley’s favourite tins features a picture of a dog and young boy selling newspapers on the side of a street.
Shirley says she is not collecting tins for their possible resale value, but purely for the enjoyment they bring her and says she’ll never give up looking for more of them.
