Show and Tell – 1970's HMV Radiogram

Friday 26 October 2007

This week’s “Show and Tell” item discovered by Adrian via the Collector’s website is a stunning 1970’s HMV Radiogram called a “Rhapsody” and is owned by Peter from Western Australia.

Adrian confesses his first job was selling these products in a department store, but he said it was simple enough as they sold themselves whenever he put on a song by Burt Bacharach or the Tijuana Brass.

Adrian says one of the first things to look for when accessing the quality of a radiogram is to check that the cabinet isn’t too ‘party’ stained. The mechanics should also be in good working order, particularly the record player and the speaker. Finally check underneath to see that the legs are in good condition too.

At a garage sale Adrian says you might pick one of these up for $20-50 because people these days don’t think they’re worth much, though if you went to a 70’s designer shop in Sydney or Melbourne a radiogram in good condition could fetch $600 - 700.
