Episode 34, Friday 3 October 2008
Collectors is on tour at the Inveresk campus of the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceston. Andy sets the scene with a guided tour of the Museum, which started life as the Inveresk railway yard and workshops in 1868. The Museum moved here in 1993, after an extensive refurbishment and decontamination.
Meanwhile, Niccole looks at the Museum’s original site, the Royal Park Building which dates from 1891. In the 1960s it was modernised, covering up much of its internal Victorian beauty. Now it’s being restored to its original grandeur, so Niccole show us what a Museum must go through to move thousands of precious items out of their home and into storage. It’s a huge job, and very delicate. The restoration is major, and will be completed late in 2010.
