Episode 36, Friday 17 October 2008
Niccole presents a delightful Show and Tell object, which this week was sent in by Nan, who lives in NSW.
It is a fan which was given to Nan’s grandfather in 1888 by an Indian Rajah. It is Chinese, and probably dates from the late 18th century, or possibly early 19th century. The beautifully lined box it lives in identifies it as being made for the flourishing Chinese export market, and explains why the fan is in such wonderful condition.
Niccole reckons it is worth at least $1500, and possibly as much as $3000.
