Chairs part 2

Episode 37, Friday 24 October 2008

Gordon Brown visits the National Gallery of Victoria for the second part of our “chair trilogy.” Previously Gordon marvelled at the ornate chairs of the 19th century, and now it’s early 20th century chairs .

The Gallery has built up a comprehensive permanent collection of chairs, and the early 20th century boasts some very big and influential names, David Kendell, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Frank Lloyd Wright, Joseph Hoffman and Otto Wagner. These and other designers took their inspiration from the Industrial Revolution and the new mass production techniques that were emerging, along with the demands and expectations of new, modern lifestyles.
