To anthropologist Alison Waters, hats are an important part of our social history, and to her own life as well. “A hat makes you feel marvelous and lifts your mood instantly. It’s an accessory that completes everything, not just the face.” Alison has 160 hats, wears one hat every day for inspiration and would like to establish a “Hat day for ovarian cancer”.
Hats help display a mood, whether in a celebratory, sombre or a flirting frame of mind. They are important “height raisers” for short people. Alison tells a story about needing to wear a hat to make her appear taller when she met Malcolm and Tammy Fraser.
She sums up her enthusiasm for hats by calling them “wearable art.”
