Tool Club

Episode 40, Friday 14 November 2008

Collectors visits the Hand Tool Preservation Association of Australia’s 25th anniversary Convention in Melbourne. The HTPAA is based in Victoria but has members nationwide. This is a club of men who are dedicated to old tools, their discovery, rescue and restoration. Almost by definition these tools are all top quality, because early last century there was no notion of obsolescence, everything was built to last. And they looked good.

In other countries there are tool Museums but not in Australia, and the work that these club members do in cataloguing, researching and maintaining tool collections is preserving a valuable history…particularly of Australian made tools.

Another important service the club provides is assessing tool collections for widows whose husbands have passed away leaving a shed full of tools. They ask people don’t just throw them away, but contact the club who are happy to give free expertise and assistance.
