Episode 40, Friday 14 November 2008
Gordon Brown gets around from week to week to be sure, but now he travels back a few thousand years. He visits antiquities expert Frank Bottaro and finds that even a little statue that’s 2500 years old is eminently affordable.
Ancient Egypt was a North African civilization spread along the middle to lower reaches of the Nile River. Alexander the Great conquered Egypt in 332 BC, and it eventually became part of the Roman Empire.
Antiquity is a wide term for objects from the historical period centered around the Mediterranean Sea, and comprising the civilizations of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome.
Many small antiquities are not that rare, so Gordon urges us to not be discouraged in this area of collecting, but instead find and cultivate a good dealer.
And again, Gordon gives us all some practical advice on spotting fakes. Sadly, they are around.
