Michael hooks up with a pair of raucous South African accountants and their clapped out landrover. They explore Lake Malawi and surge on to Dar es Salaam. On Zanzibar Island Michael interviews a young Muslim woman who reveals a tangles web of government sanctioned oppression and torture. He narrowly avoids gaol after investigating official complicity in the heroin trade.

Back in Tanzania he heads fro the Serengeti to avoid the heat. A week later he's scrambling up Mount Kilimanjaro dodging a rampant bush fire which wipes out a party of French climbers behind him and claims the life of an American just ahead.
