Emergency Survival Kit

Ideally, prepare your kit with all the following items, or at least make a list so you will know where to find them quickly in your home.
  • Battery-operated radio (with spare batteries)
  • Torch (with spare batteries), candles and waterproof matches
  • Strong shoes, leather gloves, hat, goggles and overalls
  • First aid kit and manual, and combination pocket knife
  • Medications, toiletry and sanitary supplies and a change of clothes
  • Special needs for infants, the aged and people with disabilities
  • Water in sealed containers - ten litres per person (for three days)
  • Three days supply of canned food (plus can opener and utensils)
  • Pet food, water and other animal needs

Initial Minor Flood Warning for the Latrobe River
Initial Moderate Flood Warning for the Tanjil River

Issued at 6:41 AM on Sunday the 23rd of November 2008
by the Bureau of Meteorology, Victorian Regional Office
Rainfall totals of up to 50 mm have been recorded since 9am Saturday in the
Latrobe River catchment, with further totals of up to 20 mm expected today.
This rainfall is causing stream rises in the Latrobe River catchment, and minor
to moderate flooding is expected to develop in the Latrobe Catchment during
Sunday.
Latrobe River upstream of Yallourn:
The Latrobe River at Willow Grove is rising, and is expected to peak below the
minor flood level [5.5 metres].
Tanjil River:
The Tanjil River at Tanjil Junction is rising, and is expected to exceed the
minor flood level [1.5 metres] in the next few hours. A peak around the moderate
flood level [2.5 metres] is expected late Sunday morning.

The Latrobe River at Thoms Bridge is expected to peak around the minor flood
level [4.0 metres] Monday or Tuesday.
Rosedale:
The Latrobe River at Rosedale is expected to rise during Monday or Tuesday, and
may exceed the minor flood level [4.0 metres] during Tuesday or Wednesday.
Predicted River Heights/Flows:
Tanjil River at Tanjil Junction - peak around minor flood level late Sunday
morning.
In the interests of community safety the SES suggests following precautions:
* Don't walk, ride or drive through floodwater,
* Don't allow children to play in floodwater,
* Stay away from waterways and stormwater drains, and
* Keep well clear of fallen power lines

Issued at 6:38 AM on Sunday the 23rd of November 2008
by the Bureau of Meteorology, Victorian Regional Office
Rainfall totals of up to 100mm have been recorded in the Tambo River catchment
since 9am Saturday. Heavy rainfall in the Tambo River catchment is expected to
continue with further rainfall totals in excess of 50mm forecast. Some stream
rises have occured and flooding is expected to develop in the Tambo River
catchment during Sunday.

Tambo River at Swifts Ck has begun to rise and is expected to continue rising
during Sunday.

Tambo River DS Ramrod Ck has begun to rise and is expected to continue rising
during Sunday.
In the interests of community safety the SES suggests following precautions:
* Don't walk, ride or drive through floodwater,
* Don't allow children to play in floodwater,
* Stay away from waterways and stormwater drains, and
* Keep well clear of fallen power lines

Moderate Flood Warning for the Dargo River
Issued at 5:52 AM on Sunday the 23rd of November 2008

Rainfall totals of up to 100mm have been recorded in the Mitchell River
catchment since 9am Saturday, with the heaviest rainfall falling since 9pm
Saturday. Heavy rainfall is expected to continue in the Mitchell River catchment
during Sunday, with further falls in excess of 50mm expected during Sunday.
Stream rises, and flooding, are expected during Sunday in the Mitchell River
catchment. Minor to moderate flooding, with the chance of major flooding, is
expected to develop in the Mitchell River during Sunday.

Mitchell River upstream of Glenaladale:
The Mitchell River at Waterford is expected to exceed the minor flood level (3.5
metres) later Sunday morning, and continue rising during Sunday.
Dargo River:
The Dargo River at Lower Dargo Road is currently steady. Stream rises in the
Dargo River are expected during Sunday.
Glenaladale:
The Mitchell River at Glenaladale is rising, and is expected to exceed the minor
flood level later Sunday and continue rising during Sunday.
Bairnsdale:
The Mitchell River at Rosehill is rising, and is expected to exceed the minor
flood level late Sunday morning, and continue rising during Sunday.

This flood warning covers both the Victorian and New South Wales parts of the
Snowy River catchment.
Moderate Flood Warning for the Snowy River
Moderate Flood Warning for the Buchan River
Issued at 5:52 AM on Sunday the 23rd of November 2008
by the Bureau of Meteorology, Victorian Regional Office
Rainfall totals of up to 100mm have been recorded in the Snowy River Catchment
since 9am Saturday. Heavy rainfall is expected to continue in the Snowy River
catchment, with further rainfall totals in excess of 50mm expected during
Sunday. Streams in the Snowy River Catchment have begun to rise during Sunday
morning and flooding is expected during Sunday and Monday. At least moderate
flooding, with the chance of major flooding, is expected in the Snowy River from
Sunday.
Snowy River upstream of McKillops Bridge:
Rainfall totals upstream of Mckillops Bridge of up to 20mm have been recorded
since 9am Saturday. Stream rises and areas of minor flooding in the Snowy
catchment upstream of Mckillops Bridge are expected during Sunday.
Snowy River downstream of McKillops Bridge:
Snowy River at Mckillops Bridge is expected to rise during Sunday and may exceed
the minor flood level [2.5 metres].

Snowy River at Basin Ck is beginning to rise and is expected to exceed the minor
flood level [3.5 metres] later Sunday.
Buchan River:
The Buchan River at Buchan is at 1.74m [minor flood level 2.5m] and rising. The
Buchan River is expected to exceed the minor flood level in the next few hours,
and exceed the moderate flood level [3.5 metres] later Sunday.
Orbost:
Snowy River at Jarrahmond is beginning to rise and is expected to exceed the
minor flood level [3.9 metres] Sunday evening and continue to rise into Monday.

Snowy River at Orbost is beginning to rise and is expected to exceed the minor
flood level [4.0 metres] Sunday evening and continue to rise into Monday.

Severe Weather Warning
for damaging winds
for people in the Alpine Areas, Central, West and South Gippsland and East
Gippsland forecast districts.

Issued at 04:25 am EDT on Sunday 23 November 2008.

Weather Situation
A deep low pressure system is located just off the east coast of Victoria and
will move away to the east on Sunday night.

Damaging winds averaging 60 km/h with peak gusts around 110 km/h are forecast
for the Alpine Areas and East Gippsland forecast districts and parts of the
Central and West and South Gippsland forecast districts.

The severe weather warning for parts of the Western, North Central and
Northeast forecast districts has been cancelled.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
- Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
- Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
- Keep clear of fallen power lines.
- Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
- Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
- Beware of fallen trees or debris on the road.
- For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

The next warning will be issued by 11:00 am EDT Sunday.

Rain and thunderstorms which may lead to flash flooding is forecast for the
West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
- Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
- Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
- For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

The next warning will be issued by 11:00 am EDT Sunday.

Sheep graziers warning

Warning to Sheep Graziers
for the West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts.

Issued at 04:18 am EDT on Sunday 23 November 2008.

Sheep Graziers in parts of the West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland
forecast districts are warned that rain, temperatures down to 7 degrees and
winds averaging up to 60 km/h are expected during Sunday. There is a high risk
of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these severe conditions.

The warning to sheep graziers for the Western, North Central and Central
forecast districts and parts of the Northern Country, Wimmera and Northeast
forecast districts has been cancelled.

Flood warning

A cold front moved across Victoria last night. A low pressure system will
develop near the Gippsland coast during today. The low is expected to deepen
significantly off the Gippsland coast of Victoria later today and early Sunday
before moving away to the east Sunday night. Rainfall totals in excess of 100 mm
are expected in East Gippsland during Saturday night and Sunday. Rainfall totals
of up to 5mm have been recorded in the 24 hours until 9am Saturday morning in
East Gippsland. This rainfall has not caused any significant stream rises. The
heavy rainfall expected during Saturday and Sunday is likely to cause stream
rises in East Gippsland from later Saturday or early Sunday. Areas of moderate
flooding, with the risk of major flooding, are expected to develop in East
Gippsland catchments from early Sunday morning.

Catchment specific flood warnings have been issued for the Mitchell, Tambo and
Snowy Rivers.

The Bureau will continue to monitor the situation, and will issue catchment
specific flood warnings if and when required

A cold front moved across Victoria last night. A low pressure system will
develop near the Gippsland coast during today. The low is expected to deepen
significantly off the Gippsland coast of Victoria later today and early Sunday
before moving away to the east Sunday night. Rainfall totals between 50 to 100
mm are expected in West Gippsland catchments during Saturday night and Sunday.
Rainfall totals of up to 10mm have been recorded since 9am Saturday morning in
West Gippsland. This rainfall has not caused any significant stream rises. The
heavy rainfall expected during Saturday and Sunday is likely to cause stream
rises in West Gippsland from later Saturday or early Sunday. Areas of minor to
moderate flooding are expected to develop from early Sunday morning. The highest
risk of flooding is in the Thomson, Macalister and Avon catchments.
